EFT or Emotional Freedom Technique is a deceptively simple technique which can help you make powerful changes to your behaviour patterns, thoughts, beliefs and your body. It doesn't use any equipment and can be used anywhere by anyone.
I have been teaching EFT as a one day workshop since 2004. Although it is a simple technique, you can optimise its effect by the way you formulate your statements and layer the tapping sessions. I have taught many students how to use these techniques for themselves, friends and family with very positive results.
As a Behavioural Kinesiologist, I use EFT in many different ways during my other treatments. It is a valuable correction modality in kinesiology sessions. I also use it at times when emotions surface in reiki sessions and for physical blocks such as a chronic tight muscle in aromatherapy or reflexology sessions. It has proved a valuable addition to my therapy toolbox!
EFT is a meridian energy therapy. Just like acupuncture, it works directly on the meridian system in the body. Instead of needles, you stimulate the major meridian points by tapping on them or massaging them lightly.
EFT is a true mind/body healing technique because it combines the physical effects of meridian treatments with the mental effects of focussing on the pain or problem at the same time.
EFT is a self help protocol, designed to be easy to use by Gary Craig. Prior knowledge of meridians is not required in order to learn Emotional Freedom Techniques.
Do not underestimate the changes that can occur. Use this sensibly and sensitively. It is recommended that anyone with a history of psychiatric disorders, chronic depression or who is having any form of psychiatric treatment or counselling should work with a qualified Meridian Energy Practitioner with the approval of their counsellor, psychiatrist, psychologist etc.
Those with complex problems or ones with many layers or aspects may also wish to be guided by a qualified Meridian Energy Practitioner who can help them work through all the aspects of the presenting problem to get the best possible results from the treatment. They will still be involved in the process and will be able to do much of the work themselves.
Studies have shown that about 60% of people using EFT for the first time have a sense of release and a feeling that something has changed. Another 20% feel noticeably better and subsequent treatments bring about more changes.
EFT is based on the following theory 'discovered' by Gray Craig which is termed the Discovery Statement.
"The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system."
It is as though the distressing memory causes a short circuit in the energy pathways so that the energy cannot flow freely along the pathway and has to find an alternative route. Our physical pains and diseases are connected with our emotions and therefore the following statement has also proven to be true.
"Our unresolved negative emotions are major contributors to most physical pains and diseases."
This disruption can be addressed by working with the acupuncture meridians to clear the short circuit and thus release and clear the cellular memory or trauma. This means that it is not necessary to identify the situation or memory to be able to clear the blockages in the energy pathways.
Tapping on the specific point where the energy is blocked or the end of the relevant meridian while thinking of the problem or memory releases the energy block and defuses the negative emotion. The sequence of points used in EFT taps all the 14 meridians to release blocks in any of them so that the body's energy system is 'flushed' through and cleared of blocks.
If the memory does not cause a disruption in the body's energy system the negative emotion cannot occur. This is why some people are bothered by their memories and others are not. Not everyone has this tendency for their energy systems to become unbalanced by memories. For people with this tendency, reliving the memory vividly as in conventional psychology may actually cause more of a disruption in the body's energy system.
The discovery statement also means that if all negative emotions have the same cause i.e. the short circuit - they can all be relieved in a similar manner. This is true for fears, phobias, PTSD, worry, guilt and limiting emotions in sports, business and the performing arts, even in life.
